How do I prevent SPAM from reaching my Inbox? PDF Print E-mail

We run a system on the blueskyhost.net server that tags the Subject line of spam messages as well as messages containing viruses before delivering them to your Inbox. We do this rather than simply deleting them in case the system makes a mistake. By filtering these messages into a separate mail folder you can prevent them from cluttering your Inbox, while being able to review them occasionally in case anything important slips through.

What we suggest you do is create a Mail folder called "Spam" and filter these messages into that folder. The strings you need to filter on are:

  • {Spam?}
  • {HighScoreSpam?}

The {Virus?} tag is no longer applicable because we now automatically delete all viruses. We haven't seen a legitimate document infected for about 10 years, so there's no point in forwarding them.

In Outlook Express, use the right mouse button to click on Local Folders in the Folders window on the left hand side, then click on New Folder. This opens a new window. Type "Spam" into the Folder name box and click on OK. Then go to the Tools menu, click on Message Rules, then Mail.

Click on the New button and then in Section 1 check the box that says "Where the Subject line contains specific words". In Section 2 check the box that says "Move it to the specified folder".

In Section 3 click on the underlined words "contains specific words", which opens another window. Add each of the strings listed above by typing them in and then clicking the Add button. When finished click OK. Then click on the underlined word "specified" which opens another window. Browse to the Spam folder, select it and click on OK.

In Section 4 give the filtering rule you've just created a name such as "Spam" then click on OK. Now as spam emails are received they will automatically be moved to the Spam mail folder. You should occasionally check that there's nothing in there that shouldn't be, and forward us a copy of anything that is. If you do so, please make sure you remove the {Spam?} tag from the subject line, or we'll filter it out ourselves and miss it!
